Kings-Grand Dukes of Orange-Nassau
From 1815 until 1890, the Kings of the Netherlands also held the title of Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was given the the Dutch King as compensation for the land that was given to Prussia.
William I (1815-1840)
Born 24 August 1772. Married firstly Princess Wilhelmine of Prussia on 1 October 1791. After her death, William married Countess Henriette d’Oultremont de Wégimont, created Countess of Nassau, on 17 February 1841. This marriage was morganatic. Reigned from 15 March 1815 until his abdication on 7 October 1840. Died 12 December 1843.
William II (1840-1849)
Born 6 December 1792. Married Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna of Russia on 21 February 1816. Reigned from 7 October 1840 until his death on 17 March 1849.
William III (1849-1890)
Born 19 February 1817. Married firstly Princess Sophie of Württemberg on 18 June 1839, who died in 1877. Married secondly Princess Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont on 7 January 1879. Reigned from 17 March 1849 until his death on 23 November 1890.
Grand Dukes of the House of Nassau-Weilburg
When William III died without a surviving male heir, the Luxembourg throne went to the Nassau-Weilburg branch of the family, as was agreed in the 1783 Nassau Family Pact, which stated that all German lands (including Luxembourg) would be inherited according to Salic law.
Adolphe (1890-1905)
Born 24 July 1817. Married firstly Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mikhailovna of Russia on 31 January 1844, who died less than a year after the wedding. Married secondly Princess Adelheid-Marie of Anhalt-Dessau on 23 April 1851. Reigned as Duke of Nassau from 30 August 1939 until 20 September 1966, when the Duchy was annexed to the Kingdom of Prussia. Reigned as Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 23 November 1890 until his death on 17 November 1905.
William IV (1905-1912)
Born 22 April 1852. Married Infanta Marie Anne of Portugal on 21 June 1893. Reigned from 17 November 1905 until his death on 25 February 1912.
Marie Adélaide (1912-1919)
Born 14 June 1894. Reigned from 25 February 1912 until her abdication on 14 January 1919. Died 24 January 1924.
Charlotte (1919-1964)
Born 23 January 1896. Married Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parma on 6 November 1919. Reigned from 14 January 1919 until her abdication on 12 November 1964. Died 9 July 1985.
Jean (1964-2000)
Born 5 January 1921. Married Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium on 9 April 1953. Reigned from 12 November 1964 until his abdication on 7 October 2000.
Henri (2000-present)
Born 16 April 1955. Married Maria Teresa Mestre y Battista-Falla on 14 February 1981. Reigns from 7 October 2000 until present.
