Jewellery
Luxembourg has a huge collection of jewels, especially for such a small country. The most impressive piece is definitely the Empire tiara, which sees its rival only in Queen Silvia’s Braganza tiara, but the Luxembourg royal family disposes of many other beautiful historic pieces. Browse around in the list below for some examples.
Most of the historical pieces are part of the “Hause Schmuck”, a foundation that owns the jewels, so they cannot be inherited by different members of the family and get lost in the process. This way, the jewels remain at the disposal of the reigning royal family. An exception must be made for the jewels that once belonged to Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte, née Princess of Belgium. She received many beautiful pieces upon her marriage to (then) Hereditary Grand Duke Jean, but these were private property. After the death of the Grand Duchess, the family wanted to sell her jewels but huge public outrage made them change their minds. So far, the most iconic pieces are still in the family.
